Language preferences for Chinese can be understood as the communicative practices enacted by those who identify as Chinese, both in terms of their linguistic repertoires and the degree to which they engage in language variation. This phenomenon is understood, in part, through the lens of language ideologies, which refer to the sets of beliefs held by a given social groups about language, linked to power and identity.
