1. Fix a Firefox problem when mouse-scrolling in the contents sidebar.

   When the entire Contents list does not fit in the sidebar, you can scroll it with the mouse. However, if you hit the bottom of the sidebar, the scroll effect jumps to the main frame. This can cause the main frame to switch to a new topic relative to the Contents list. The result of changing the Contents topic now being displayed causes the highlight in the Contents sidebar to switch to the new topic. That, in turn, causes the sidebar to scroll to display the newly highlighted item. Thus a topic at the bottom of the Contents sidebar may no longer be accessible. But the objective of scrolling the sidebar was to get to that item near the bottom, not to scroll the main window. So this is a frustrating effect.

   I note that this problem does not arise with Chrome. That is because the scrolling effect does not automatically switch to the main frame, when you hit the bottom of the sidebar. I hope there is a way to fix this in Firefox, as I normally use Firefox.

2. Michiel van Kempen het slachtoffer van arbitraire academische onderscheidingen

   We kunnen ons wellicht allemaal nog Pieter Vroon voor de geest halen die ergens in de jaren zeventig een geruchtmakend essay publiceerde onder de titel: weg met de psychologie hoewel Pietje zelf hoogleraar psychologie aan de RU Utrecht was. Voor de rest maakte hij ook als volkskrant columnist furore. In 1986 vergastte deze hoogleraar personeel en medewerkers in de kantine van de Utrechtse universiteit op een bijzondere act. Hij gaf uit protest zijn doctorsbul terug aan het bestuurscollege van de universiteit
   met als argument dat Nederland te lichtvaardig zou omgaan met het lauweren van
   flinke burgers uit de locale- en internationale gemeenschap met eredoctoraten
   hetgeen in geen goede verhouding zou staan tot de ijver van diegenen die na jaren
   zwoegen een proefschrift ineen hebben weten te knutselen om dat nog eens ten
   overstaan van een streng beslagen jury te verdedigen. Een ge-ere-doctoreerde heeft
   overigens net zoveel rechten en faciliteiten als iemand die zijn doctorsgraad via de
   formele kanalen heeft verkregen .

   In Nederland worden mensen uit zowel van eigen bodem als uit het buitenland voor de
   grootste onbenulligheid en doffe geestverruiming ge-ere-doctoreerd. Neem als illustratief
   voorbeeld de uitgever Geert van Oorschot die op grond van zijn Russische bibliotheek,
   waarin in het Nederlands vertaalde romans’ van Russische schrijvers werden opgenomen ,
   gelauwerd werd met een eredoctoraat in de Nederlandse taal-en letterkunde. Wat was er zo bijzonders aan de vermeende prestatie van deze uitgever? De romans’ waren toch niet
   door hemzelf geschreven? Hetzelfde geldt voor Albert Heijn die vanwege zijn streepjescode die hij van achter een borrelglas had verzonnen zich een eredoctoraal op de hals wist te halen. Uiteraard zijn er ook uitzonderingen. Toen Gerrit Komrij onderscheiden werd met een eredoctoraat vond ik het een kritische daad van rechtvaardigheid! Maar deze euforie trok zich gauw terug in mijn geestelijke reservoir toen de Iraanse schrijver en volkskrant columnist, Kader Abdollah een eredoctoraat kreeg geoffreerd door de universiteit te Groningen. Vóór deze onderscheiding werd hem eerder een bul in handen gedrukt als doctorandus in de Nederlandse taal-en letterkunde zonder dat Kader Abdollah ooit een studie aan een Nederlandse universiteit had voltooid. Hij had er niet eens op gezeten! Er zijn ontwikkelingslanden die de reputatie hebben dat je er alles geregeld kunt krijgen. Nederland verschilt in dat opzicht niet eens een sikkepit ondanks het feit dat de Hollander de reputatie geniet stoïcijns te zijn. Of had Johan Kruijf misschien nog een keer gelijk met zijn ooit van enige eruditie getuigende uitspraak dat Nederlanders even exuberant zouden zijn als de Spanjaarden en Argentijnse vrouwen. Nelson Mandela kreeg door de universiteit te Amsterdam eveneens een eredoctoraat als welkomstgeschenk toegeworpen omdat hij de positie van blanken in Zuid-Afrika consolideerde in plaats van die te democratiseren. Is een dergelijke daad een eredoctoraat waard? Waarom niet een Hollandse windmolen?

   De universiteit van Amsterdam had onlangs ook te verduren met Prof. Dr. Mart Bax,
   oud-hoogleraar politieke antropologie. Mart Bax van de Vrije Universiteit heeft verzonnen onderzoeksresultaten gepubliceerd, niet-bestaande artikelen op zijn publicatielijst gezet en valsheid in geschrifte gepleegd in universitaire documenten. Dat concludeerde een onderzoekscommissie onder leiding van historicus prof. dr. Michiel Baud van de universiteit van Amsterdam.
   Bax deed voornamelijk veldonderzoek naar religieuze strijd in kleine dorpsgemeenschappen, onder meer in Brabant, Ierland en Herzegovina. Op zijn publicatielijst (161 artikelen) stonden minstens 64 titels van artikelen die niet bestaan. Ook bevatte zijn cv ten onrechte gastdocentschappen aan prestigieuze instellingen zoals Princeton en Cornell. Aan de dezelfde universiteit werd in 2006 een nieuwe hoogleraar gedoopt in de Caraibische letteren en wiens proefschrift kwalitatief heel wat te wensen overlaat. De naam van deze hoogleraar is Michiel van Kempen.
   
   Het proefschrift van de tot Surinamist verheven Brabander, Michiel van Kempen bevat reeds in eerste oogopslag uitsluitend archiefgegevens over de geschiedenis van de Surinaamse literatuur en was reeds eerder in Suriname verschenen in een vijfdelige editie. Redenerende vanuit de totstandkoming van dit proefschrift dat in Nederland opnieuw in maar twee delen werd uitgebracht , kan Van Kempen vooraf nooit een promotievoorstel hebben geschreven en dat er beoordeling hebben voorgelegd aan enig promotor.

   Hij heeft zijn in Suriname gepubliceerde archiefmateriaal gewoon weten te droppen bij een goedgelovige en gewillige hoogleraar aan de UvA , die bereid is geweest zijn noeste vlijt voor een voldragen proefschrift aan te zien. Van Kempens’ dissertatie getuigt in wetenschappelijk opzicht niet van een vooropgezette doortimmerde theorie of hypothese die getoetst zou kunnen worden in een kwantiatieve-en kwalitatieve-achtige setting. Evenmin laat hij zien dat hij gewerkt heeft met een groot aantal vergelijkbare onderzoeksobjecten, test- en controlegroepen. Dit krijg je als je logerend in het Surinaamse archiefbureau berghoge aangevreten krantenstukken, vergeelde dossiers etc. letterlijk zit over te pennen. Er ontbreekt er reeds bij eerste oogopslag een hoofdstuk in over de gehanteerde onderzoeksmethode en één over de theoretische verantwoording. Hoewel hij één van de vijf delen gewijd heeft aan de theorievorming, staat dit deel er helemaal als los zand bij. De verzamelde veldgegevens zoal daar op enigerlei wijze sprake van mocht zijn, zijn in het proefschrift op geen enkele wijze wetenschappelijk geadstrueerd.

   Het proefschrift heeft hierdoor het uiterlijke kenmerk van een schoolwerkstuk. Tot slot zijn alle stellingen zoek waardoor de vraag rijst wat er aan nieuws/ongekends door Van Kempen onderzocht is geweest en vooral wat hij verdedigd heeft. Kijken wij naar de praktijk van Van Kempen dan is het op z’n zachts uitgedrukt zorgelijk dat hij maar liefst zestien promovendi onder zijn hoede heeft. Eén van hen, Cynthia Abrahams genaamd, promoveerde een jaar terug op de poëzie van de Surinaamse revolutionaire dichter, Ravales Dobru. Een proefschrift over poëzie bevat doorgaans een degelijk uitgewerkte poëzieanalyse, zoals die zichtbaar is in het proefschrift van Wiel Kusters die promoveerde op de poëzie van Gerrit Kouwenaar en verder in het proefschrift van Jaap Goedegebuure die promoveerde op de poëzie van Marsman. In het proefschrift van Cynthia Abrahams kom je als lezer heleboel politieke uitweidingen tegen omdat Dobru ook politicus was maar nergens in de dissertatie is de poëzie van Dobru literair geanalyseerd. Als je hierbij stil staat weet alleen Joost hoe het zal vergaan met de overige aspirant promovendi onder het gezag van Van Kempen

15. Disable extension on localhost domains

    As a web developer I spend a lot of time in the chrome developer console on localhost. The Wikiwand extension throws an Access-Control-Allow-Origin error on every page served from localhost. Either disabling the extension on private domains or serving the required content locally (as another user suggested) would be great.

17. Can I have direct link to random article , if it disturbs your UI , you can make it optional in settings .

    I like to read random articles , but everytime I have to go to Wikiwand logo and then click on random article , it would be convenient if there can be shortcuts like , mouse middle or right button or some gesture like opera has , or/and keyboard shortucut , or/and direct link for random article near the WikiWand logo. Btw I am a big fan of WikiWand.
